Dear All: I'm almost at the end of my second month on Leflunomide. I'm having some side-effects (rectal pain!), painful wrist, increased thirst and urination, occasional headaches and upset stomachs. My GP is aware of these. unfortunately I just finished a two month ciourse of Prednisole as my knees were badly swollen. Now I'm finished these my knees are really swollen again. I've just recently started a new job and I've not broadcast about the RA. I'm trying to appear as normal as possible!!! It is increasingly difficult to walk normally so I won't be able to hide it next week...then the questions start!

I want to take three doses of full strenght Ibuprofen to see if this will decrease the swelling at all. i've not been advised to not take it, but has anyone else done this. So far the Leflunomide has not kicked in. Though I have noticed that the stiffness has not come back...maybe the weather being warmer???

My bloods are all wonky but nothing too serious.

Thanks.
J

Hi Jan,

Sorry to hear you are having problems.
It's impossible for any of us to advise as to whether you can take ibuprofen or not, you should ask your rheumy nurse or GP.
I also would think a mere 3 doses would have very little impact on your inflammation. You would be better asking your GP if a further course of prednisone would help.
The reduced stiffness you mention could be a sign of the Leflunamide starting to work for you.

Hope you can get it sorted soon.
Love Doreen xx

Hello ,

So sorry to hear that things not good with you.

I agree with Doreen ring your RA nurse. Ibrupr.is quite a mild anti-inflam and there are stronger ones
such as diclofenic, naproxin , celebrix etc. So a chat with the nurse will help you.
good luck

Rose

Hello

Just thought I'd let you know that I take diclofenac regularly (everyday) with leuflunomide. Diclofenac works in the same way as ibuprofen but is stronger. I suggest you ask your GP to prescribe this. Make sure he also prescribes a stomach protector such as omeprazole aswell.

Thanks for the response. I'm in the tricky situation that my GP does not seem to want to make any decision and keep asking when my next apt with the consultant is. Also I do not have access to a rheumatology nurse specialist...basically up the creek here...The GP saw my knees and all he said was "Oh, there is a lot of fluid in there" but made no suggestions about treatment. So I called the Cons sec and she has left a message for the con.....she also advised me that it was the GP who should be be my primary carer...and the GP says it should be the con.

I'm left frustrated and swollen!!!

Hi Jan,

Hopefully the secretary will get back to you with an appointment, it sounds as if your knees maybe need aspirating ,they usually put steroid in when they do this and it's very effective.
You could ring the NRAS helpline for advice on the care (or lack of!) you are getting.
Hope you get some help soon.

Love Doreen xx

PS have you tried ice on your knees? 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, see if it helps.
